An honor and a joy to serve this community

Sarah Rono had requested funds to attend a training program where she learned to talk about preventive care. She is Bishop Rono’s daughter finishing medical school. I wanted to post her story below…

About 6 years ago, a team set out to hold a two-day medical camp in Kapsumbeiwet (the community where we hold medical camps and follow-up clinics.) It was the rainy season, bad roads, cars getting stuck on the muddy roads, and so much more.

It was such an exhilarating experience. The grounds were full on both days; we served about three hundred people, joyfully, and by God’s grace, the idea of following up our patients was born. The idea was to have medical camps and subsequently follow-up clinics for patients who suffered from chronic illnesses and needed regular check-ups.

These past years have been such a huge success:

  • I have been able to see patients get treated, followed up and have a great improvement in their health.

  • The community has become more aware of some medical conditions that are preventable and has shown great interest in taking part in their management.

  • There has also been a huge impact on health-seeking behavior among this community.

  • Of note is that patients have become more aware of the importance of adhering to their medication. This has been observed mainly among those patients suffering from chronic illnesses.

Today was a success… I’m still very grateful. I conducted a seminar on the challenges of hypertension and diabetes. I collaborated with a doctor to help conduct a free hypertension and diabetic screening. The community at large was happy and so grateful.

Other than that, serving amongst the other volunteers has made me grow in my leadership skills and communication skills.  I have also gained knowledge on the management of patients with various diseases.

I have loved the experiences every time! Moreso, I have enjoyed serving this community. It’s been an honor and joy to be among those who serve this community.

I am certain that through Global Compassion Resources and by God’s mercy, we will continue to impact and promote a healthier community.
